Allergies

Chantal Van der Brempt

During menopause, some women may become more sensitive to allergies. This may be due to hormonal changes that disrupt the body’s immune system. The result: allergic reactions can suddenly appear or become more intense than before.

Why allergies during menopause?

  • Our immune system changes with age.
  • Some reactions appear suddenly, others become more intense.
  • It’s not “all in your head.”

Possible symptoms

  • Runny or blocked nose
  • Itchy or watery eyes
  • Skin rash or itching
  • Sensitive digestion

Causes

  • A drop in estrogen makes the immune system more sensitive.
  • Stress during this period often intensifies reactions.

Tips to ease symptoms

  • Identify what triggers your reactions (pollen, dust, certain foods)
  • Ventilate regularly, keep your environment clean, and purify the air if needed
  • Rinse your nose with a saline solution
  • Move, breathe calmly, and take enough rest
  • Talk about it if symptoms get worse

Do you recognize yourself in this? You’re not alone. Tomorrow comes a new everyday symptom — often ignored, never imagined.
