Brittle Nails

Chantal Van der Brempt
52

Why now?

The decrease in estrogen levels reduces blood circulation to the nails. As a result:

  • Fewer nutrients to strengthen nails
  • Less keratin production

What you may notice:

  • Nails that easily split into layers
  • Nails that break without any clear reason
  • Nails becoming thinner or softer
  • Slower nail growth

Helpful tips to strengthen your nails:

  • Regularly moisturize your nails and cuticles
  • Trim and file your nails to avoid snags and cracks
  • Use strengthening base coats rich in biotin or keratin
  • Wear gloves for household chores
  • Avoid harsh products such as acetone-based removers and thick polishes

Which cosmetic solutions to choose?

For fragile nails, it’s better to choose:

  • A light strengthening gel applied directly to the natural nail (such as “BIAB”)
  • A nourishing, strengthening base coat

Avoid:

  • Acrylic artificial nails
  • Dip powder techniques
  • Thick or rigid gels

Do you recognize yourself in this?
You are not alone. Every body reacts differently to menopause. Taking good care of yourself starts with listening to these small signals from your body.
