Do you notice more hair in your brush, shower, or on your pillow? Frustrating, right? But it’s a fairly common symptom of menopause.
Why am I losing (the quality of) my hair?
Estrogens support hair growth. They prolong the growth phase and shorten the resting phase (= the hair stops growing but stays attached).
But when estrogen levels drop, androgens (like DHT) can sometimes take over and weaken the hair follicles.
Result: → finer, more fragile, and thinner hair, sometimes with bald spots
What you might notice:
- Your hair is less dense
- You lose more hair than usual
- Your parting seems to widen
- Your temples or crown become thinner
- Your hair is drier or changes texture
But why now?
Falling estrogen levels can make the immune system more sensitive.
And the stress of this period doesn’t help: it often amplifies reactions.
Actions that help:
- Eat enough protein (yes, hair is made of it!)
- Ensure you get enough iron, vitamin D, zinc, and biotin
- Reduce stress (I know, easier said than done, but every bit helps 😅)
- Take care of your scalp: gentle massages, sulfate-free products, avoid tight hairstyles, use thickening products
- Talk to your doctor: sometimes minoxidil, supplements, or hormonal support can be useful
Do you recognize yourself?
You are not alone.
It’s a reality shared by many women.
Maybe this is the perfect time for a new trendy haircut! 😎
