Hot flashes

Chantal Van der Brempt

You’re sitting quietly… and suddenly, a wave of heat hits you. Red face, sweating, heart racing… You’re among the 75 to 85% of women who experience this in menopause. It’s not “just feeling a bit warm.” It’s a real symptom. And everyone knows this one… even men. 😛

Why does it happen?

Oestrogen levels drop → your internal thermostat loses its bearings. Result: a small change in temperature or, like for me, a little stress… and boom, hot flash. It’s even become my stress detector, haha! Thanks, menopause.

What it can cause:

• Unexpected sweating, daytime and/or nighttime, sometimes intense
• Facial flushing
• Insomnia
• Anxiety, irritability
• Craving cold air, a fresh breeze!

Helpful tips to ease it:

• Caaaalm down, breathe, slow the pace
• Regular physical activity
• Eat a balanced diet rich in omega-3 and vitamin D
• Avoid alcohol, coffee, spicy foods
• And yes, grab a small pocket fan or a pretty hand fan

A good way to cope is to be prepared, laugh about it, and when it’s not too bad, simply wait for it to pass.

Other “hacks”:

What works for me is combinig Oestrogel (a gel with bioidentical estrogens) with red clover, evening primrose oil, and above all, stopping (or at least nearly) alcohol and overeating/junkfood. Since then, it’s been “under control” 😁
• Black cohosh
• Siberian rhubarb
• Sage
Note: always under medical supervision — even for plants!

Do you recognize yourself?

You’re not alone. Tomorrow I’ll talk about another everyday symptom… the one that makes you snap in a split second, sometimes without knowing why. Irritability.
