As menopause approaches, menstrual cycles often become unpredictable. Shorter, longer, skipped… or all of the above.
These irregularities are caused by hormonal fluctuations (especially estrogen and progesterone) that throw off the body’s usual rhythm.
Why now?
Hormones — especially estrogen and progesterone — start to fluctuate.
Result: ovulation becomes irregular, and so do periods.
What you might notice:
• Cycles that are shorter or further apart
• Heavier bleeding (my case… 🤯) or lighter flow
• Spotting (small bleeds between periods)
• No period for several months… then a surprise return (well, hello!)
What can help you regulate this phase or ride it better:
- Start with the basics: metabolic health. Adopt a lifestyle that fits this new life stage. It’s the foundation for healthy aging — heart, body and mind — and taking care of yourself is an act of self-respect.
- Track your cycle (app or notebook).
- If cycles become hard to handle: options exist. Medication — effective ones. Discuss with a health professional.
Do you recognize yourself?
You’re not alone.
Irregular periods can be the very first sign that your body is in transition — as if it’s starting a new, freer chapter with its own rules.
