During menopause, vaginal dryness becomes common. Fewer estrogens = less natural hydration.
Result: itching, burning… and sex can become painful.
Why it happens
→ Estrogens help keep vaginal tissue supple, thick and well lubricated.
→ When levels drop, the lining becomes thinner, less elastic and drier.
→ This can lead to irritation, itching or pain during intercourse.
What you might feel
- Itching or a burning sensation
- Persistent dryness, even outside of sex
- Pain or discomfort during intercourse
- Less pleasure, more tension
- Sometimes even a small loss of confidence or desire
Helpful tips to ease it
- Start with a water-based lubricant for sex (effective and safe)
- Use a vaginal moisturizer regularly
- Stay well hydrated (yes, it helps here too)
- Avoid perfumed or irritating products
- Keep sexually active (solo or with a partner – good for blood flow)
- Consider discussing bio-identical hormone therapy such as BHRT (often very effective)
